Exciting receiver added to Sharks Roster

JACKSONVILLE, FL- The Jacksonville Sharks announce the signing of offensive specialist Darien Townsend, who signs with the Sharks for his second season of arena football and first year with the Jacksonville Sharks. 

Darien Townsend (5’9”, 180) spent his rookie season with the Columbus Lions in 2022 where he played wide receiver for new Sharks Coach Jason Gibson. Townsend was 2nd in the league in receiving touchdowns (23), 3rd in the league in both receptions (74) and yards (856). A dynamic player, Townsend also led the league in both kick return yards and touchdowns.  

“Darien is one of the most explosive players in Arena football.  What excites us is the work ethic, professionalism and hard work he brings to every practice and game.  He is a difference maker." Said Sharks head coach Jason Gibson. 

Townsend began his college career at Youngstown State University in 2014. As a freshman he played in ten games for the Penguins. During his time at YSU Darien played in an FCS championship game, was 3rd all time in Punt return yards for a season and finished 2nd all time in punt return average.  In 2016 he was selected  2nd team all conference.  

Darien is a native of Youngstown, Ohio where he played high school football at Youngstown Christian. A four year letter winner, Darien was 1st team All-Northeast Inland District Division VII as a senior and amassed more than 1,000 total offensive yards each season.  He also played in the OHSBCA North-South All-star game in Dayton, Ohio and was a member of the honor roll.
